3 Decades of Disruption: Why AI Messaging Will Change Everything Again.

Looking Back at a Lifetime of Change
I turned 60 this week. And as I tend to do at significant milestones, I sat down and read through the journals I’ve been writing in every day for almost 40 years.
One of the most interesting entries I found was from 1993, the day after someone first explained the internet to me. I wrote, “This can’t be true! There’s no way a data network can be free!”
The Moment That Changed Everything
For context, in 1993 I worked at MCI Telecommunications, selling data networks to companies that needed to connect their office computers across the country. At MCI, we got paid for providing those long-distance connections. And there I was, being told by a lawyer named Albert Angel that this thing called the Internet would make that entire business model obsolete. There was no way the 28-year-old version of me believed that was possible. I was young, confident… and completely naïve.
Witnessing Decades of Disruption
Now, at 60, I’ve seen firsthand how disruptive new technologies can completely reshape industries, and I’ve seen that movie more than once. PCs, the World Wide Web, mobile phones, and social networks all changed the game. I was also part of founding one of the world’s most successful business text messaging platforms (3Cinteractive, acquired by Cisco in 2021), and I’ve spent the past several years immersed in AI, long enough to have logged my 10,000 hours with this extraordinary technology.
